Woman on Fire
USA -  84 minutes

Writer/Director: Julie Sokolow
Producer: Danny Yourd
Cast: Brooke Guinan, George Guinan, Jim Baker

This portrait of courage under fire celebrates NYC’s first openly transgender firefighter. For Brooke Guinan, fighting fires runs in her blood – both her father and grandfather served in the FDNY. But as a transgender woman, her path to service has not been without obstacles. Transitioning from male to female in what is still an overwhelmingly macho profession proves a challenge for her coworkers and her family, while her boyfriend reckons with the impact of Brooke’s newly public profile on his parents.

The man-children survive by remaining in the employ of Chee's Uncle Rob, a wealthy Silicon Valley landlord-tycoon. When Uncle Rob asks them to do a seemingly small job: get his nephew Mayunk a fresh haircut and new suit for his upcoming engagement party, Chee and T kick back thinking they're in for the easiest job of their 'careers.' Unfortunately for the duo, young Mayunk has an unfiltered swagger and talent for hunting down narcotics. It turns out that handling their hyperactive, drug-crazed little cousin proves to be anything but simple.

In addition to the Academy, the students are all invited to participate in everything the Omaha Film Festival has to offer which includes the Writer’s Theatre, the Filmmakers Conference, and the over 100 films that will screen at the Village Pointe Theatre from March 7-12.

Walk With Me: The Trials of Damon J. Keith
Canada - 104 minutes

Director: Jesse Nesser
Producer: Patrick Lane, Mitch Albom, Sally Davis
Cast: Damon J. Keith, Mitch Albom, John Conyers Jr, Peter Hammer

The story of ten extraordinary years, four groundbreaking cases, and one unconventional federal judge.

An ordinary "colored" janitor from Detroit, whose personal struggles reflected those of a nation first coming to terms with civil rights, Damon J. Keith became a controversial judge who used the law to advance social change, ultimately changing the country. Today, at 94, he is still on the bench; he is still the only federal judge ever to be sued by a sitting U.S. President, and his rulings continue to influence a nation still arguing about "which lives matter" almost 50 years later.

It may be the greatest story you never heard.

Pre-registered students will receive an OFF Academy badge which will grant them access to all of the OFF Academy panels as well as all Omaha Film Festival screenings.

Participant Check-in / Breakfast from 8:00am - 9:00am

In its twelfth year, the Omaha Film Festival looks to significantly increase its educational reach with the continuation of the OFF Academy.  Sessions will take place on Thursday and Friday, March 9 & 10 at the Funny Bone Comedy Club, directly across the street from the Village Pointe Theatre.

The three main pillars that the Academy is built on are ENTERTAINMENT | EDUCATION | INSPIRATION.

With industry professionals from across the country the two-day sessions will give students an inside look at screenwriting, acting, cinematography, film lighting, animation, editing, directing, and producing and will include hands-on interactive workshops targeting students in the disciplines they’re most interested in.

In addition to the Academy, the students are all invited to participate in everything the Omaha Film Festival has to offer which includes the Writer’s Theatre, the Filmmakers Conference, and the over 100 films that will screen at the Village Pointe Theatre from March 7-12.

The OFF Academy is made possible in part by grants provided by:

After leaving her hometown for big city life, Rose must return home to care for her ailing mother. It is the 1950s, and Rose is a trailblazer at a time when the role of women was beginning to change.

Back home, she befriends James, a deaf man. Although the role of women was evolving, deaf people were still typically seen as outcasts.

Rose is intrigued by James. She learns that just because he cannot hear or speak, there are many ways to communicate, and finds that he is intelligent, thoughtful and creative.

Although her family and friends discourage the unlikely friendship, the two grow to appreciate each other and fall in love.

Sometimes you find what you are looking for where you least expect it — and coming home, Rose discovers hers.

Dave Made a Maze
(Comedy)
USA - 81 minutes

Director: Bill Watterson
Writer: Steven Sears, Bill Watterson
Producer: John Charles Meyer, John Chuldenko
Cast: Nick Thune, Meera Rohit Kumbhani, James Urbaniak, Adam Busch

Dave, an artist who has yet to complete anything significant in his career, builds a fort in his living room out of pure frustration, only to wind up trapped by the fantastical pitfalls, booby traps, and critters of his own creation. Ignoring his warnings, Dave's girlfriend Annie leads a band of oddball explorers on a rescue mission. Once inside, they find themselves trapped in an ever-changing supernatural world, threatened by booby traps and pursued by a bloodthirsty Minotaur.

DAVE MADE A MAZE re-imagines classic 80s adventure films with a modern comedic edge and a higher body count. The handmade fantasy world comes to life with puppetry, stop-motion animation, & in-camera optical illusions.

The Islands and the Whales
UK, Denmark -  81 minutes

Produced/Director: Mike Day

In their remote home in the North Atlantic the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide, proud to put local food on the table. The land yields little, so they have always relied on harvesting their seas.

Hunting whales and seabirds kept them alive for generations, and gave them the way of life they love; a life they would pass on to their children. But today they face a grave threat to this tradition.

It is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves.

The Faroese are among the first to feel the effects of our ever more polluted oceans. They have discovered that their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition.

The Bear and the Owl
USA - 46 minutes

Director: Mark Davis

In 1986, a young girl from Beloit, WI was about to celebrate her 7th birthday in the Boston Children's Hospital. After her teacher puts an article in the local newspaper requesting cards from the community, a complete stranger responds by sending her a handmade card every day for two and half years. The heartwarming bond that forms between them showcases the healing power of love, empathy and compassion. 30 years later, as she's about to undergo her 42nd (and hopefully last) surgery, Joni's optimistic strength is an inspiring example of the difference that a simple act of kindness can make.

Herd
Canada -  52 minutes

Writer/Director: Stefan Morel
Cast: Liz Mitten Ryan

Herd explores how horses can guide us to heal the chaos within our lives.

During a weeklong off-grid nature retreat, deep in the heart of British Columbia’s horse country, eight people participate in a collective spirit quest of meditation and equine therapy.

The film documents a nascent, interspecies community where horses and humans share fears, doubts and truths as they form a new hybrid herd. The horse/human communication transcends language to foster a dialogue of shared mindfulness.
